A full description of the course can be found in the technical guide.

*All racers will be run together for one cash prize list, but scored separately for their respective association championships. VACA 30+/40+ and MABRA 35+/45+ Masters will run together, but will be scored separately for association BAR competitions. Masters races open to Cat 1-4 only. Women’s VACA and MABRA Cat 1-2-3 run together, but Cat 1-2 and 3 scored separately for association championships and cash prize lists. Master 3/4 race is a stand-alone event, and will not be scored as part of the Tour of Page County omnium. Juniors 15-18 field is open to all juniors categories. A locally hand-crafted trophy will be awarded to the first place winner of each omnium category. Other prizes (such as the traditional homemade fruit pie for the first place road race winner) may be issued for each category at the promoter’s discretion, but will be announced in advance.

The WWVC Racing team set some lofty goals for 2010 road season. Although we are not yet a team stacked with numerous Cat 1’s & 2’s, we did have some strong Masters racer’s looking to make a mark on that scene in addition to some very promising talent coming up through the ranks in the 4’s & 5’s.

As one of the smaller teams in MABRA, we like to think we make up for that deficiency in racing and training as a team. We’ve removed the sometimes seeming barriers between our experienced rider’s and younger rider’s to foster growth and an enrichment toward feeling positive about the personal and team accomplishments we realize on race day. At the end of the day, it’s the relationships you build and the camaraderie you gain through blood, sweat and hard work which makes bike racing so rewarding.

In the off-season, during our goal setting, we challenged our membership to begin transforming ourselves from a widely viewed “club” to a “racing” team. We adjusted various pieces of our membership and enrollment requirements to align with our new mission. Needless to say, our team rallied around this calling with a renewed enthusiasm and drive to make things happen.

Our Masters squad garnered some early success which we were all thrilled about. We definitely started out on a good note. Our Cat 4 & 5’s quickly took over the momentum and started achieving result after result. The train was rolling!

As we entered the mid-late season races, we were really gelling as a team. One of our bright up and coming stars, Nicholas Taylor, was absolutely on fire. We again set some lofty team goals with eyes focused up the road.

During the period of July and August, our 3 and 4 squads produced some incredible individual and team performances:

MABRA Crit Championships: 3rd Place Cat 3, Nicholas Taylor

Giro di Coppi: 1st Place Cat ¾, Nicholas Taylor; 4th Place Cat ¾ Peter Warner

VA & MABRA Road Race Championships- Page Valley: 1st Place Cat 3, Nicholas Taylor (And Yes, we are thrilled to have the C3 RR Jersey(s)!); 5th Place Cat 5, Ed Patrick

Luray Crit: 3rd Place Cat 3, Nicholas Taylor; 7th Place Cat 5, Ed Patrick

Tour de Millersburg: 2nd Place Cat ¾ TT, Peter Warner; 2nd Place Crit, Peter Warner; 6th Place RR, Peter Warner; 1st Place GC, Peter Warner (HUGE team effort here!)

MABRA TT Championships: 1st Place Cat 3, Peter Warner; 2nd Place 40-45, Chris Gould

VA TT Championships: 2nd Place Cat 3, Peter Warner; 7th Place Cat 3, Chris Gould

Dawg Day’s: 1st Place Cat 5, Ed Patrick

South Mtn Hill Climb: 1st Place W4, Melissa Goldbold

What a way to end the road racing season! From a team perspective, we couldn’t be more proud about the sacrifices and dedication it took to end the year on a high note!

Folks are already dusting off their cross bikes and the listserve is booming with excitement over the cross calendar looming on the horizon. Watch out for the Red and Black! The rest of us will be there cheering them on with beer in our hands, packing on the much needed lbs for a winter of off-season training to come.

**If you interested in learning more about racing for WWVC during 2011, please feel free to direct your interest to wholewheel@gmail.com. We will be setting our roster for the 2011 year during the Nov-Dec time period.

Registration for the Tour of Page County opens at noon on Wednesday, July 7th, at www.pre-reg.com. Sponsored by Page Valley Cycling and co-promoted by Whole Wheel Velo Club, the Tour of Page County consists of the Page Valley Road Race (Saturday, Aug. 7) and the inaguaral Luray Criterium (Sunday, Aug. 8).

The Page Valley Road Race is the Senior Championship Road Race both both VACA and MABRA. The Tour of Page County is also part of the GamJams Cat 3 Cup, p/b Mountain Khakis, the Proteus/MABRA Cat 3 and Cat 4 Women’s Race Series, and the MABRA and VACA BAR.

The Tour of Page County is your opportunity for an entire weekend of challenging races and BAR points for the low price of just $45! And, with so much to do in Page County, this event is a perfect opportunity to have a close-to-home vacation for your family and friends!

Participants may register for each event separately, but for selected fields, we will also be scoring an omnium by calculating the results of the two events on a simple point system for each field based on final results, the KOM competition for the road race, and premes for the crit.

The Tour of Page County has an emphasis on local, with a “Taste of Luray” event sponsored by the Luray Downtown Initiative on the day of the crit. Most of our prizes will reflect our local theme, including wines from local Virginia wineries. Also, the winner of the omnium in each field will receive a unique ceramic trophy bowl hand-crafted by Lucia King, a Page County-based artist. While results from the separate 35+ 3/4 race in the crit will not count towards the omnium, a special trophy bowl will be presented for that separate event as well.

Be sure to check out the Tour of Page County t-shirts as well!

Information on the Tour of Page County, including a technical guide and a copy of the flyer, may be found at www.pagevalleycycling.com.

We look forward to seeing you in Page County!

Warmup: 1 hour of zone 2 shoveling. Then do 3 one-minute high cadence, low-load shoveling intervals with 2 minutes of easy shoveling in between. Then, do 10 minutes of tempo shoveling followed by five minutes of easy shoveling.

Test: 5 minutes of shoveling all-out. Start out hard and hold it. Try and clear an entire driveway covered in two feet of snow in this five minutes. This will get rid of that “fresh” feeling to be sure the FTP test is accurate as well as stimulate the lactate clearance systems (in the shoulders and back.) Follow this five minutes with five minutes of easy shoveling. Then, do a 20-minute shoveling-trial. Try and clear an entire neighborhood in those 20 minutes. Really dig deep (literally).

Cooldown: 10 minutes of zone 2 shoveling.

Your shoveling FTP will be 95% of the volume you cleared during the 20-minute shoveling trial. Oh, and at this point you should probably have someone drive you to a hospital.

Chris “Sittin’ In” Hall showed the team why he is normally found at the back of the peloton, chatting with the moto ref and waiting on the sprint: he can absolutely fly from the 200 meter mark. He spent the past weekend proving this with a win at the Nittany Cup Track Races in Trexlertown, PA.

Hall, who has spent the season focused on track events competed in the Sprint, the Kilo, the Points Race, and the Scratch Race. While he posted respectable results in all events, it was in the Match Sprints where he really made his mark by winning the Cat 3/4 overall.

Hall sailed through the initial qualifying rounds by posting personal best times and still saying that he was “certain to do better next time by trying one gear smaller.” As he entered the match sprint rounds he bested riders from several teams with a combination of power and sound tactical decisions. In the championship round, however, things got interesting as he was paired up against former teammate and regular training partner Bo “Robster Craw” Lee. Chris was not worried and said, “I beat Bo before and was feeling confident against him. I knew what he had to do to beat me so I would just have to do my best to prevent that from happening.” The two played a nerve wracking game of cat and mouse until Chris decided the moment was right. He said, “I hit the inside and just put my head down and went and Bo was right on my wheel. Of course I never looked back so I didn’t realize until afterwards that he was right on my wheel. We stayed that way the rest of the lap and he couldn’t come around me so I took the win.” From his description, it all sounds so easy.

Though practically every member of Whole Wheel Velo Club will freely admit that they don’t understand track racing or the various track events, the team is proud of Hall’s win, especially as it comes over such a respected opponent and friend of Whole Wheel. They will now be looking forward to seeing Hall once again sit in the back of the off-season group rides, pretending to have something wrong with his shoes until the next sprint point comes around…
